Feeding Schedule

A simple schedule from veg through to harvest: Veg 4-4-4 in the soil mix and through the veg phase, Bloom 2-8-4 through flower. No cal-mag, no extras — just plain water in between feeds.

Setting up

  • Soil mix — 8–10 g per litre. Veg 4-4-4 mixed into the soil before planting. Rest covered for 2–3 days before transplanting.
  • Pot size — 30 L recommended. Larger pots hold more charge between feeds; smaller pots need lower doses scaled to volume.

The schedule, week by week

Week Feed Notes
Veg week 1 Plain water Settling in — the soil mix carries the plant, no top-dress needed yet
Veg week 2 2–3 g Veg 4-4-4 per litre of soil First feed — top-dress onto the soil surface, water in
Veg week 3 Plain water Rest week — the plant draws on the previous feed
Veg week 4 — transition ½ Veg + ½ Bloom: 1–1.5 g of each per litre One week before flower — top-dress, water in
Bloom week 1 Plain water Flower phase begins — let the plant settle before the first bloom feed
Bloom week 2 2–3 g Bloom 2-8-4 per litre First flower feed — top-dress, water in
Bloom week 3 Plain water Rest week — the plant draws on the previous feed
Bloom week 4 — final feed 2–3 g Bloom 2-8-4 per litre Last feed of the cycle — after this, no more fertiliser
Weeks 5–8 Plain water — until harvest The plant draws down stored nutrients for the final four weeks of ripening. No top-dress, no supplements

Worked example — 30 L pot

1 tablespoon ≈ 15 g

  • Soil mix (once) — 240–300 g (16–20 tablespoons). Mixed into the soil before planting, at 8–10 g per litre × 30 L.
  • Each feed — 60–90 g (4–6 tablespoons). Top-dressed onto the soil surface every other week, at 2–3 g per litre × 30 L.
  • Transition feed — 30–45 g (2–3 tablespoons) of each product (Veg + Bloom). Half-strength dose for the transition week.
  • Total Veg 4-4-4 per cycle — 330–435 g (22–29 tablespoons): soil mix (240–300 g) + week 2 feed (60–90 g) + ½ transition (30–45 g).
  • Top-dress Veg only — 90–135 g (6–9 tablespoons), if using pre-amended soil: week 2 feed (60–90 g) + ½ transition (30–45 g).
  • Total Bloom 2-8-4 per cycle — 150–225 g (10–15 tablespoons): bloom week 2 (60–90 g) + week 4 final (60–90 g) + ½ transition (30–45 g).

On top-dressing: mix with equal vermicompost or good compost, then top-dress onto the soil surface. Aids breakdown and feeds soil biology.

On cal-mag

Strongly recommended for luxury growth. Veg 4-4-4 and Bloom 2-8-4 already contain calcium and magnesium, but supplementing with cal-mag pushes plants to luxury levels — stronger structure, peak chlorophyll, denser growth. Essential with reverse osmosis or very soft tap water, where the mineral baseline is naturally low.

Rate: optional, at 10% of the fertiliser amount — add it alongside each application. With a 60–90 g feed that is 6–9 g of cal-mag; with the 240–300 g soil mix, 24–30 g.
