Is liquid gypsum safe for pets and children?

Calcium sulphate is a benign mineral with no withholding period for edible crops. Once a soil drench has soaked in or a foliar spray has dried, the treated area is safe for pets and children to use as normal. As with any garden product, keep pets off while you are applying it and store the bottle out of reach.

Gypsum is the same mineral used in plaster and as a setting agent in tofu, and it has no toxicity to soil life and no phytotoxic threshold at garden rates, so you will not scorch plants by getting the dose slightly wrong. A foliar spray at the higher end can leave a harmless fine white film on leaves, which is simply the mineral itself and washes off. None of this is a reason to be careless: store it sealed and out of reach, apply it when pets are indoors, and if an animal manages to drink a quantity of the concentrate, ring your vet for advice as you would with any garden product.
