How long does liquid gypsum take to work?
Because it is milled to about 5 microns, liquid gypsum dissolves within hours of reaching moist soil, far faster than granular gypsum. You may see surface drainage improve after the first heavy rain or watering on dispersive clay. Lasting changes to soil tilth build over a season of regular use, and the structural effect of any gypsum is temporary, lasting roughly two to three years.
So there are two timescales to hold in mind. The chemistry is quick: dissolved calcium is available to plants and to the clay within hours, and on capping soil you can sometimes watch water soak away faster after a single watering cycle. The structural improvement, where it happens, is gradual and builds across a growing season of regular applications. None of it is permanent. Gypsum is a top-up, not a one-off cure, which is why the rates are repeated through the season and why the durable structural work belongs to organic matter, which keeps building year on year.
