Dr Forest Liquid Gypsum, white bottle with ribbed cap
Pets, children and your lawn

Off while you water it on. Back on once it has soaked in.

Liquid Gypsum is ground natural gypsum, the same mineral as plasterboard, in water. Not a weed or pest treatment. Treat it like any garden concentrate: bottle out of reach, everyone off while you apply, back on once it has soaked in.

At a glance
  • Natural gypsum rock, 19.55% calcium, 15.31% sulphur. Nothing synthetic added.
  • Off the lawn while you apply. Back on once the grass is dry to the touch, usually an hour or two.
  • The thing to watch is the neat bottle. Rinse the can; never leave the jug on the lawn.

We do not print "non-toxic" on the bottle. Ground rock is not a drink. If a child or pet swallows the concentrate, ring NHS 111 or your vet with the bottle in your hand.

How long to keep off

What you did Back on when
Watered on a lawn Soaked in, grass dry to the touch
Watered around veg or fruit Soaked in. Wash produce as usual
Sprayed on leaves Leaves dry
Spilt on a path Hose it off; it dries to a chalky film

Our own guidance, not a legal waiting period; gypsum is not a pesticide so has none. Cats, rabbits, hens and toddlers: same rule. Rates and timing: clay lawns page.

Storing it

  • Lid tight, label on, high shelf, away from food and feed. Never pour it into a drinks bottle.
  • Above 5 °C, never frozen, use within 12 months. Do not store it diluted.

Common questions

Is it toxic to dogs?

It is mined gypsum: no pesticide, nothing caustic. We still do not call it non-toxic, because the neat concentrate is a lot of ground mineral to swallow. Bottle, jug and can out of reach; dog indoors while you apply.

My dog licked the wet grass or drank from the can.

A lick of the diluted mix is a very small amount and we would not expect a problem, but we are not vets. Drank from the can or bottle: ring your vet.

Can I use it where my children play?

Yes. Apply while they are indoors, let it dry to the touch, keep the concentrate on a high shelf.

Does it harm worms or wildlife?

Nothing in it is aimed at insects, worms or hedgehogs. Keep the concentrate out of ponds. Not certified organic.

Will it actually help my lawn?

Only if your clay falls apart in water. The overnight glass test tells you; the price page says what it costs.
