Which fertiliser do I need?
Four short questions. We name one feed to start with — usually All Purpose 4-4-4 for a mixed plot — put right whatever is going wrong, and suggest one thing worth adding. Or read the short version below.
The short version, if you would rather read it
Default bag for mixed beds, trees, hedges and pots: All Purpose 4-4-4. Brassicas take the top of that range; herbs the low end. Browse the organic fertilisers range. Tomatoes, aubergines, courgettes, cucumbers and squash: Tomato 3-4-6. Chillies and peppers: Chilli & Pepper 3-3.5-7. Potatoes: Potato 3-5-8. Strawberries and figs: Strawberry 3-2-7. Roses and shrubs: Rose & Shrub 5-3-5. Most other fruit and vegetables, including peas, beans, roots and alliums fed once: Fruit & Vegetable 4-5-6. Flowers needing a phosphorus push: Bloom 2-8-4. Lawns: Lawn 10-3-3.5 or the liquid 7-2-3. Feeding as you water: Liquid 5-2-5 for growth, Liquid 3-2-6 for flower and fruit. Blossom end rot is a watering problem first; Cal-Mag is the back-up. Older leaves yellow between the veins: kieserite. Heavy clay: gypsum with compost, not instead of it.

We would rather sell you one bag that does the job than three that do not. If your soil is already in good heart, the honest answer to the second and third cards is often “not yet”.
