What are organic dry amendments?

There is a shelf in every garden centre for bottled plant food. The quieter answer sits in a sack of ground meal or mined mineral, worked into the soil and left to the microbes.
Organic dry amendments are solid, slow-release inputs you mix into soil or scatter on top as a top dress: meals ground from plants, mined minerals, ground rock, composted brans. They do not feed the plant directly. They feed the soil life, the worms, bacteria and fungi that break them down and hand the nutrients to roots over weeks and months.
That is the whole idea behind a living soil. You build it once, keep it fed, and it does the day-to-day feeding for you. Bottled liquids have their place for a quick correction, but they skip the soil and wash through fast. This is a plain guide to the main families of dry amendment, and an honest answer to the question most people actually have: which ones do you need, and which can you leave on the shelf.
The short version
Dry amendments are slow, solid inputs that feed soil life rather than the plant. The organisms release the nutrients gradually, which is what keeps a living soil ticking over.
What most gardens need
A nitrogen meal, a potassium or mineral input, and something to feed the biology. The rest is fine-tuning you can skip unless a soil test says otherwise.
So what counts as a dry amendment?
A dry amendment is anything solid and slow you add to soil to improve it: a ground plant meal, a mined mineral, a bag of rock dust, a composted bran. You either work it into the bed before planting or scatter it on the surface as a top dress, then let rain and worms carry it down. The word organic here means carbon-based, plant-derived inputs and naturally mined minerals, made with organic ingredients rather than synthetic salts.
The contrast is with a liquid feed. A bottled feed is already dissolved, so a plant can drink it straight away. That makes it quick, and quick is occasionally what you want. It also means it moves through the root zone in days and needs reapplying, and it does little for the soil itself. A dry amendment asks for patience and gives you something the bottle cannot: a soil that gets better each season instead of staying flat.
How they differ from bottled feeds
The difference is the route the nutrient takes. A liquid feed goes from bottle to root. A dry amendment goes from sack to soil life to root, and that middle step is the point. As soil organisms digest the meal or weather the mineral, they release nutrients at roughly the pace a plant can use them, and they build soil structure and organic matter as a by-product of the work.

The six families of dry amendments
Most dry amendments fall into six groups. You do not need one from every group. The table sorts them by what they do and how often a home garden really calls for them, and the notes underneath cover the ones that need a bit more care.

A rough map, not a shopping list. The right combination depends on your soil, and a cheap soil test tells you more than any table can.
Phosphorus is where the animal question comes up. Bone meal is the traditional dry source, and it works, but it is a slaughterhouse by-product. We leave it out. Micronised rock phosphate gives you a plant-compatible mineral route to the same nutrient, released slowly as roots and soil acids make it available. Calcium and magnesium deserve a word of caution. You will read that soil needs a fixed ratio of one to the other, a magic figure to chase. A widely cited review by Kopittke and Menzies found that within the range of most soils, those cation ratios have little bearing on fertility, and that chasing them wastes money [1]. Reach for gypsum or Epsom salt to fix a deficiency a soil test has actually shown, not to hit a number.
The biology aisle asks for the most scepticism of all. Bagged microbes and mycorrhizal inoculants promise a living soil in a scoop. A 2025 meta-analysis by Koziol and colleagues tested 250 commercial products and found that fewer than one in eight delivered both a real growth benefit and viable fungus [2]. Feeding the organisms you already have, with bokashi, a little biochar and steady organic matter, is the more reliable route to the same end.
Which do you actually need?
For most outdoor gardens, three things cover the ground. A nitrogen meal for growth and to keep the microbes fed. A potassium input or a scattering of rock dust for fruit, flowers and broad minerals. And something for the biology, so the first two get broken down properly. That is a living soil in three moves.
